A Midsummer
Night's Dream
A note from the Director
Greetings fairies, lovers, and all makers of magic and mayhem! Thank you for sharing our dream during this fourth season of Brampton’s Own Shakespeare show. And thank you for supporting independent local theatre.
When I first started working on this play, two things stood out for me. The combination of chaos, mischief and joy and how deeply embedded the idea of playmaking was in the work. It reminded me of so many other Shakespeare plays that reference how all of us are merely players in this world. I decided to push the boundaries a little further. What we have created here isn’t just a play within a play. It’s a play within a play – within a play. Welcome to our playground!
We'll be stopping the action twice for questions, so please don't be shy and raise your hand. It is our ultimate goal to make as many people fall in love with Shakespeare, with outdoor theatre, and with our Brampton parks this summer. Sit back, relax and enjoy!
Thank you,
Maissa Bessada
P.S. If you have 2 min after the show, please fill out our audience feedback survey (QR code below). It would be so helpful to hear what you think.
Synopsis
A whimsical tale of love, mischief, and magical mix-ups.
Hermia wants to marry Lysander. Her father wants her to marry Demetrius. Helena is in love with Demetrius, but he barely knows she exists. In an attempt to escape the chaos, Hermia and Lysander flee into the forest—and that’s where everything goes deliciously sideways.
Unbeknownst to the lovers, the woods are ruled by a feuding fairy king and queen: Oberon and Titania. Oberon, plotting a bit of romantic revenge, sends his mischievous sprite Puck to meddle with a magical flower that causes people to fall in love with the first person (or thing) they see. Naturally, Puck's foolery and tricks get in the way—and suddenly, everyone’s in love with the wrong person.
Meanwhile, a group of enthusiastic amateur actors (led by the hilariously confident Nick Bottom) are rehearsing a play for the Duke’s wedding. Bottom becomes the target of Puck’s magic and ends up with... the head of a donkey. Titania, under the spell, falls madly in love with this new donkey-headed dreamboat.
Cue chaos, confusion, fairy squabbles, lovers’ quarrels and enchanted forests!
As the night stretches on and reality blurs with enchantment, one question remains...
Will everyone wake from the dream—or stay lost in the magic forever?
